Your Artist year end review!

Chairs   PK Cravens

The Art Biz Blog has an excellent year end review well worth considering. I am definitely going to work my way through it.Here is an excerpt.

Creative Challenges

What medium or skill did you attempt or master?
What did you try that was completely new?
What did you try that was uncomfortable, but helped you grow?
What new art events, galleries, and museums did you visit?
What art seminars/workshops/lectures/classes did you participate in or teach?
How did you improve your studio habits?

The big question

Seashell vase     Paula Cravens

Time and time again, I hear the question, "How much should I price my work for?" Here is a very good article addressing just that topic.

The "M" word

Dreaming of Ghost Ranch   acrylic collage

I'm working on marketing, that is....thinking about it, reading about, doing something about it. It's the artist dilema that painting simply isn't enough, you have to work at marketing too. I am making plans for what I want to learn in 2013, what I want to paint and new ways to sell.

Currently, I am checking out the Artist helping Artist's blog:  http://www.blogtalkradio.com/artistshelpingartists/2012/04/12/using-pinterest-to-sell-your-art

I find the interviews long but worth listening too. Get a cup of coffee and take the time. And as for Ghost Ranch, I would love to stay there for a month and just paint!

It's Up to You

 Draped Model   16x16    P. Cravens

There was a dissonance in the force when the topic of price controlling cropped up regarding the Headwaters Art Society Winter Art sale. The price guidelines are merely that, guidelines. Please feel free to join us and set your own prices. We understand that there must be flexibility for different skill levels, etc. And may the ART force be with you.

How to Proceed

Cervus Argentum 2 by Paula Cravens

1) paint another piece

2) paint another one

3) and another

4) repeat step 1

5) repeat this for the rest of your life"

The locals were very unsure when I proposed a Zombie walk in Canal Flats. Check out the video below. It's just an idea whose time is coming. Zombies. Coming. ..RUN!!

Midnight at the Oasis

This is going to be a great event. I attended the dinner murder mystery a few years ago.  It was terrific fun and the food was wonderful. Hope to see you there.

We held a great art show at the Canal Flats Community Centre as part of the Columbia Basin Culture Tour. We were a bit disappointed by the turnout (40 people on Saturday and 10 on Sunday) but a couple of local realtors were hugely impressed. They recently held an open house and had only one person show up!

We were entertained by the demos of the Arabian Spice Bellydancers and managed to finance sending a butt to Vegas as part of their fundraising, a creative scheme whereby you can sponsor a various bellydancer body part to take the trip.

I am very impressed that such a novice group has now had three shows! We are learning, and most important, we are having fun.

Wilmer painting classes

Bill Doroshuk

the 7th Annual Wilmer Painting Week.

It will take place from Monday September 10 to Friday September 14 and, as usual, will be based at the Delphine Lodge in Wilmer.  Artists are encouraged to paint out of doors (plein aire) and in whatever medium they choose (oils, acrylics, watercolours, charcoal, pen and ink....).  Our instructor/mentor this year will be Val McPhee, who taught us very successfully at the 2nd Painting Week in 2007.  Participants will be encouraged to paint the local scenery in and around Wilmer, and there will be one day when we will paint near Kinsmen Beach in Invermere, so that we can lunch at Pynelogs and examine the art show there.  Costs are the same as before: $250.00 for the full week, or $50.00/day.  If participants wish, they can paint for half days at $25.00/day.   We will meet at the Delphine Lodge at 9.00 am each day, enjoy coffee/tea and cookies, listen to a half hour presentation, then go out and paint.  Participants should bring their own lunch.  In the afternoons, we usually break around 4.00 pm and gather in the Delphine Lodge garden to discuss the day's work.  On Friday evening Sept 14, we will have a wind-up barbeque and exhibition to which friends and spouses are invited.  I shall be out of town until August 12, at which time I will circulate more details.  Early enrollment is recommended, so please send me E mails and I will attempt to respond.

I went to this a few years ago and had a great time. Val is an accomplished landscape artist and a thorough and gentle teacher, perfect for newbies. If you can’t go for a week, go for a day. Sebastian is very accommodating.

Columbia Basin Culture tour approaches

The Headwaters Art Society is holding an art show and sale in conjunction with the Columbia Basin Trust Culture Tour August 11 and 12 from 10am to 5 pm in the Canal Flats Community Centre. Tables are available to rent for $20/day (or $15/day if you become a member). There will be refreshments available, you are inside and there are washrooms. We aren’t allowed to hang work on the walls but there is room to set up easels behind your table.
People can rent a table for one or both days. We expect you to be present for the hours we are open. Tables will be selected by the luck of the draw. We expect your prices to remain current while you are selling with us (no dickering please).
We are trying hard to establish our presence in the valley and would welcome your participation in our event.

We still have about a half dozen tables available! give me  a shout.

Students

I am currently teaching workshops at Black Star Gallery in Invermere. Today I had a terrific mother and daughter duo, Cathy and Megan show up. We spent three hours exploring collage.

 Dueling collagers

Fantastic outcome!
Thanks for being such wonderful students.
If you are interested in taking courses, Call or visit Black Star Gallery. Go on Saturday and you can take in the fabulous farmer's market too!

Frank W. Benson

I am so sick of Jun-u-ary I could hurl. I love American Impressionist and Frank Benson's sunwashed, romantic paintings are almost enough to dispell the cold, grey, wet skies. Check him out.

Summer Solstice Celebration

We had a first day of summer paint-in at Crazy rAvens Studio

 The intrepid Tony, Wolfgang and
Leslie showed up to explore gelatin prints. I made small plastic containers of gelatin that we used for a plate. We inked them, applied different objects for texture and layered our effects.
 Nice t-shirt Leslie!
 Wolfgang considers his options.
 Tony experiments.
 Some results

 Trying to improve on nature.
I always get into my work!
