Our Adventure In Acrylic Abstract

On April 29th and 30th, the Headwaters Art Society hosted a painting workshop

at the beautiful Fairmont Hot Springs Resort.

Paula Cravens, pictured above, instructed 11 students over the course of two days.

Much fun was had by all and there were many unique and wonderful creations by 

the end of the weekend. Thank you Paula!

We would also like to thank Columbia Basin Trust, Area F, and 

the Village of Canal Flats for their continued support in arts and culture.

Adventure in Abstract Acrylics

Join the Headwater's Art Society and our guest instructor, Paula Cravens, for a weekend of fun and creativity.

Two full days workshop at 

Fairmont Hot Springs Resort

April 29th and 30th, 2017

9:00am to 4:00pm each day

Paula will guide us through some points on colour theory, composition and focal points. The class will learn how to prepare watercolour paper as a substrate, and techniques such as gelli printing and making stamps. 

Paula will demonstrate tape transfers and mounting papers to board and canvas. There will be plenty of time for painting and experimenting.

All materials are supplied and the cost of the workshop includes, 12 hours of instruction, lunch, coffe/tea service, as well as a wine and cheese reception on Friday, April 28th, 2017 

from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Fairmont Lodge. (Public is welcome)

Gesso and an abstract dubbing

 It's always challenging coming up with titles for abstracts but I like the idea of using "Transit of Venus" for this one.


From the book "New Acrylics Essentials Sourcebook:

"When re-priming surfaces, use proper ground, never wall pant. An artist acrylic gesso is designed to be compatible with flexible and rigid substrates. ...A wall paint is designed for a flat, rigid surface and does not carry enough binder and thus will not adhere as permanently to the support, nor will it be flexible enough to weather any structural changes; this type of primer will crack and or flake off and will ultimately have a negative effect on the permanence and structural integrity of the entire piece."


I used to prime my hardboards with just latex paint. On one painting, as I was adding layers, the layers below began to disintegrate and pull off. Lesson learned. Invest in gesso and use it. If you want really smooth canvases or boards, use several thin coats of gesso, sanding (when dry) between coats.
